I (we) hit a mini milestone this week. This thing called the Windsor Terrace Bulletin passed the 300+ subscription mark and I couldn’t be happier!

For me, it might as well be 3M but regardless THANK YOU for making that happen. I was stuck at 290 something , made a call to action via my Substack Notes- ( Ms. Sundberg re-stacked -thank you!) and got it done! So, thanks a million (or 300!)

And for all you small business folks reading this ( and there are a lot of you), I am still impressed about how effective Instagram is for growing followers and getting eyeballs. In just a month’s time, the data says I captured 10K views and 20+ new subscribers- so keep grinding because every little thing helps. For you Scott Galloway fans, he was saying for those folks in sales ( I’m one of them) it’s a unique job because you’ve probably just accepted that 95% of the time you get rejected- which for many people is an ego crusher- but for sales people, it’s just accepted/expected and you just move on. My point is- keep trying different ways, methods and techniques to grow your business or blog or heck - your substack because the payoff ( big or small) is worth it in the end.

As the great teacher Yoda once said , “ The greatest teacher, failure is.” ( I am hoping the little guy’s new movie coming out May 22nd is a hit- directed by Jon Favreau himself a huge Star Wars fan and directed many of the Mandalorian episodes.)

There are two buildings in Windsor Terrace that are over 100+ years old.

First, the firehouse (Engine 240/Battalion 48) located at 1309 Prospect Avenue near Greenwood Avenue was built in 1896. It was awarded landmark status in 2013. Here’s what it looked like a long time ago. If you walk past and look up, you’ll still see remnants of the ‘guard’ tower where firefighters were stationed to keep guard over fires in the night.

The other building, PS 154 ( Windsor Terrace School) was built in 1908. Here’s a photo of what it looked like ( and you can even purchase it as a print) back in the day. The architect , C.B.J. Snyder was responsible for this and many other schools in and around the city - with a unique design allowing for air and light to flow through the hallways and classrooms. The U shape allowed for more functionality with the classic front step grand entrance to the interior of the school. The huge windows which you’ll notice in a lot of older schools was by design. For a tiny school, it’s a beautiful little shaped box of a building with a nice , warm community at the heart of it. I should know , my son went there!

I’ve mentioned it below- but can’t stress enough how great the Open Stages event is - music all over Park Slope on stoops, storefronts , etc. Hopefully the weather cooperates but it’s such a great event. Between that and Open Streets - and the Knicks on fire- people's moods seem to be improved from the long Winter we went through.

May 1st couldn’t come soon enough! Seven more weeks till Summer. The Knicks won BIG last night- until the Mets win 3 games in a row I’m not even going to bother with them!

It’s good to be back after spending a few days in Vegas last week for work. For those of you who know, long days inside a cavernous conference hall with bad food adds up so it’s good to be home. Overall good for business definitely not good for caloric intake!

With all the talk about tourism being down in Vegas, a lot of the local people I met have noticed a drop in both Canadian and European visitors. All the while, Las Vegas is becoming the professional sports capital no one ever thought possible; NHL, NFL, WNBA, F1 are all there now and soon to be MLB and most likely an NBA franchise to come. I do wonder if the locals in Las Vegas itself can fill that many seats year round. For now though, Vegas is hurting.

Meanwhile, I saw the story that NY1’s Roger Clark did on our very own Farrell’s. It looks like the documentary started a few years back is gaining momentum again. Here’s the story.

I’m writing this the evening the Brooklyn half marathon took place and it was really terrific to see Prospect Park West jammed with runners, friends and family of runners all packing our restaurants, bars and delis. Soon enough, when the BRIC Arts concert series comes in the Summer you see activity like this more often.

It’s Wednesday night at 9pm while I’m writing this and it’s 77 degrees out!

Is it me or have we been skipping Spring these last few years and going right into the throes of Summer! But I’m not complaining. I love seeing the line outside of Emack & Bolios. Seeing kids devour ice cream and making a mess is probably the cutest thing in the world!

The poll results regarding outdoor dining are in; 85% of you are in favor of it which I was surprised about. I thought between the loss of parking spaces, late night diners being loud and our 4 legged friends coming out even more so, it would be the opposite. It’ll be interesting to see what restaurants choose to do it - it’s an expensive endeavor with some specific design parameters to adhere to. Let’s see what happens. Remember, sidewalk tables and chairs are different from a structure being built on the street in front or side of a restaurant. Personally, I just hate losing parking spots!

Just a heads up, there will be NO Issue #13 a week from today (24th April.) I’ll be attending the National Association of Broadcasters conference in Vegas this Sunday for a few days and there’s just no way I can do the bulletin on the road. On that note, as we head to Summer , etc. please contact me ( with the message me link below) if you would be interested in being a contributor ( named or anonymous) for some issues the weeks I’m on holiday. I’m 100% open to people sharing stories, tales or tidbits about Windsor Terrace that one person (me) can’t conceivably create week in -week out. The labor of love is more work than I thought!

• 4/18 (Sat) Our beloved Prospect Farm (1194 Prospect Avenue across Poetica) is hosting their annual Earth Day Celebration from 12pm-4pm ( see below for the activities) Rain Date Sat 4/25 same time

Local band Protectors of the Wood will be performing original music! We will have a bake sale, yard sale, and plant swap with all proceeds going towards the garden. There will also be arts & crafts activities for all ages (e.g. potato stamping, egg carton seeding), loose-leaf tea blending, a compost giveaway, and tours around our garden including native plant species.

• The city announced its plans for a complete redesign of the beloved but flawed Grand Army Plaza circle. The idea is to extend the park for a continuous path right under and around that plaza. Here’s the story

To me, Windsor Terrace feels less like a modern NYC neighborhood and more like a village the 21st century simply forgot to update. In a good way.

Before it became the sanctuary for those of us seeking a backyard, some greenery and a bit of peace and quite, it was essentially just lawyer and member of the New York State Senate John Vanderbilt's farm. In 1849, a developer named Robert Bell bought the farmland and decided “Vanderbilt’s Field” lacked a certain panache; he borrowed the name “Windsor” from English royalty and added “Terrace” to highlight the area’s slight elevation, envisioning a getaway of “pleasant cottages” for the city-weary.

Especially yesterday, when I needed to take photos for today’s issue and realized just how much it didn’t feel like I was in Brooklyn at all.

What really gives Windsor Terrace its identity, though, isn’t just the 19th-century Neo-Greco rowhouses or the 1920s brick standouts—it’s the tenacity of the people. This neighborhood has historically been a stronghold for Irish and Italian families—many of whom have lived on the same block for three or four generations even surviving when the Prospect Expressway tried to slice the heart of the area in half in the 1950’s (no thanks to Robert Moses.)

Fun Fact: The arrival of the F train in 1933 was the “big bang” for the neighborhood, turning it from a sleepy hamlet into a commuter’s dream, yet it managed to keep its small-town feel just like it is today.

So, as you grab a coffee at Cuppa Hive or a pint at The Adirondack, you’re standing on what used to be a 47-lot gamble by a guy named Robert Bell who just wanted to build a few nice houses by the park.

I’d say the gamble paid off.

Yousef: The neighborhood is very friendly and family oriented. We have had many long time customers. We’ve met a lot of generations of families here at the restaurant. But we’re not only business owners but we feel we are part of a lot of families upbringing here.

Aladdin: We are in the center of Prospect Park, Greenwood Cemetery and especially in the Summer with all the parties, concerts and people out and about. We feel close to many of the families who have raised their families here. I remember young couples who eventually got married and now have kids who are grown up. Even on holidays such as Thanksgiving, I’ve been invited to family’s homes here in Windsor Terrace when they see me working here they’ll invite me over.

Our food is Middle Eastern and made from scratch. Everything is made to order. We make our own pita bread, bake it, all our chicken is prepared to order and nothing is pre-made. We get all of our spices from overseas ( Middle East) and we are Jordanian and by the way very excited that Jordan for the first time will be in the World Cup.

Welcome to the 10th Issue!

When my wife and I made it past our 10th wedding anniversary I told her statistically divorce is less in our future- we just celebrated our 20th this past September! I’m saying this because you, the readers, have stuck with this for almost 2 1/2 months and can’t thank you enough! And no, I won’t be doing this in 10 or 20 years and if I am it’ll be remote from some exotic island!

In media terms, this audience is ‘sticky’ and engaged so thank you tons for all the likes, open emails and shares. I’m still enjoying it - the data says you are too!

All that aside, I’ve received a lot of nice notes from you. The best ones are when you tell me you’ve tried a local business, ordered take-out, went to a show and just supported the local economy and small business’ that dot this and the surrounding neighborhoods.

A big reason why I started this in the first place was so we can buy and support local as best one is able. And mostly, for me at least, to take a break from the 24 hour news cycle, talking heads and pharmaceutical commercials! ( BUT WOW WHAT A SHOT BY UCONN’S FRESHMAN- Might be the BEST game winner ever!)

But I digress, yes, a lot of us order from Amazon ( myself included) because it’s easy, we’re busy and it’s convenient but I try to balance it by buying from Prospect Market or Kiwi’s or buying coffee at Roast. Having drinks at Double Windsor or a sandwich from one of my faves, John’s Deli. We do as best as we can but it’s all appreciated by all the business owners I’ve met so far, they are grateful.

With the cost of goods, labor and rent it’s hard for any business to survive these days. The margins are so tight. I had a conversation with a restaurant owner a few weeks back and the big worry is when their lease is up- will the landlord raise their price to make it even more difficult to make money or, like so many shops I’ve seen, landlords decide to leave it empty for years. Something I’ll just never understand.

I hope everyone who celebrates Passover and Easter enjoy time with their families. I’m not Jewish but my 5th grade teacher, Sister Anne ( one of the toughest nuns I’ve ever had teach me!) had us prepare a Seder meal; grape juice, matzo and raisins. My desk mate accidentally spilled grape juice on our morbid yellow uniform dress shirt and Sister Anne went ballistic. I thought to myself, “ I bet rabbis don’t yell at their students in Hebrew School.”

A special photo this week- my family participated in the walk to cure a particular type of rare brain cancer called oligodendroglioma. It was a great group of people and despite the cold 8am weather start, the spirits were high and we were all there to support people who have been stricken by this rare cancer. We’ve all done it—texted a spouse, partner, friend, and/or our tween to “just meet up at the Bartel-Pritchard Square (circle) or columns.”

For those of us who live here, that entrance is more than just a GPS coordinate; it’s the two pillars where the “concrete jungle” ends and a bit of an imagined suburbia begins. If you grew up in the ‘burbs (like I did), it’s most likely the greenery you miss the most and a certain freedom that came along with being raised in a suburb. If you’re raising a child, tween or have done so already, Prospect Park is/was their childhood ‘playground.’ Apart from Summer camps and weekend retreats, Prospect Park will hold some key memories of just that; being a kid in Brooklyn. Same for those lucky enough to be born and raised here! Aren’t we lucky to have such a gem of a park right in our backyard!

We owe this nature escape to Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who took what they learned from Central Park in 1858 and perfected it here in 1861. For my family and so many others, the park represents a lot of things; It’s where my Son learned the mechanics of a baseball swing (and getting beamed by a wild pitches - made him tougher!) as well as playing flag football during the Fall ( best time of the year for me in the Park,) it’s where he and his teen friends (since he’s known since Kindergarten) go sledding over at the ‘hill.’ During covid, it was the place to take a mental health walk for sanity sake, practice social distancing (remember that) and trying to get some kind of exercise. When the world, it seemed, was collapsing all around us it was those walks in the Park that kept us together as a family. I’m sure you all know what I’m talking about.

On Summer nights, my wife and I still load up the “granny cart” with beach chairs and head to the Lena Horne Bandshell. There’s a specific kind of Brooklyn in that—settling in for live music and spending half the night trading “recognition waves” with people you know. Summer can’t come soon enough!

So, next time you’re passing through that entrance, take a NY minute to look up at the two pillars (pictured above.) They were designed by Standford White, one of the most influential architects of the time. From the Washington Square Arch in the Village to the mansions of The Rosecliff In Newport Rhode Island, to the Shelter House and the Maryland Monument at Lookout Hill both in Prospect Park, White’s footprints are everywhere across the East Coast, and these specific columns above were dedicated in 1911 as a final nod to his legacy.

You are literally standing in the shadow of an architectural giant right here in Windsor Terrace!

• Prospect Park’s bike path/lanes has been signed off on. The $15.5M project will finally realize a safe bike path around the entire outside of the Park. I mentioned last week about the other upgrades in the Park, things are moving fast in a good way. Read about the bike lanes HERE

WHAT MADE YOU TAKE OVER OWNERSHIP OF THIS RESTAURANT?

I’m from Argentina and graduated Culinary and Pastry School. I worked as a head chef at a restaurant in Argentina and fell in love with cooking and told myself I wanted to own a restaurant one day. I came to NYC to visit and while staying in Weehawken, NJ I saw the NYC Skyline and told my mom I want to live here. So, I came back to NYC as an Au Pair for two years until I figured out that I wanted to get back to cooking and ended up studying Culinary Arts here in New York and learned so many things. I worked at a restaurant in Hoboken and actually spent time in DisneyWorld as a cook and learned a lot about Disney culture ( reservations, handling and treating customers,etc.)

I saw that this restaurant was for sale and loved the neighborhood. I have a vision for this place to be community centered where people can gather.

WHAT TYPE OF FOOD DO YOU SERVE?

If you’re a transit nerd (I’m sort of one), you should download the NEW improved MTA App for your phone. 100% accurate on arriving train time estimates, highlights each stop if you press the actual stop and updates on elevator outages in real time ( great for parents with strollers - you know what I mean).

What I wished it can do - and I’m sure it will get there- is re-load and sync up with your OMNY card, connect LIRR and MTA train times and the ability to purchase tickets and eventually add NJ Transit options as well ( their app is actually very good!)

Welcome to Spring ( officially starts at 10:46 am.)

For me, that means Mets opening day is next Thursday (1pm game against the Pirates on NBC/Peacock.) For the die-hards, it’ll be 40 long years since they won their last World Series. If you’re a Mets fan, and there are a lot of them here in Windsor Terrace, hope springs eternal! I bought a 12 game 2 ticket package again this year with people I know- that’s 12 days of either joy or misery! The things we do….

Citi Field and the entire area surrounding it will be a completely different place in a few years. With the approval of the HARD ROCK CASINO AND HOTEL adjacent to the stadium, the brand new ETIHAD PARK to house the NYFC Soccer Team - Flushing Queens will be the center of a whole lot of activity. With all the ongoing and planned construction, the Mets announced different ways to arrive at the stadium. Read about it HERE

The most important aspect of every year is the FOOD LINEUP always considered one of the TOP offerings throughout the country! The dead center Mr. Met Ice Cream Sandwich (pictured below) is a welcome new addition! Can’t wait!

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade this past Sunday is always a special event in our neighborhood. Marking it’s 50th anniversary, it was interesting to know that the Grandfather of current NY State Assemblyman Robert Carroll was one of the founders of the parade known as the Brooklyn St. Patrick’s Parade, the oldest in the borough.

I’ve always wanted to have my own business since a young age. When I moved to Windsor Terrace with my family, I wanted to see if I can find a space/place I can walk to work, convenient without having to work in another borough. I started to walk around and it dawned on me that there weren’t that many (food) options and thought there was an opportunity to open a community driven, sandwich place where we can do culinary education and be part of the neighborhood. It was scary at first but after doing extensive research it started to make sense. I found this space and it started to become feasible and I said, ‘Let’s go for it.’

It feels good to be back in my company’s office post-renovation this past week (it took 2 1/2 months.) We are, like most, on a hybrid work schedule. I have to admit, though, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. I love the commute working in an office near Ground Zero, but with the state of the world right now, I’d be lying if I said I didn't feel a little anxious being in such a visible spot. Just yesterday, I attended a media summit on the 65th floor of One World Trade. Incredible what the area has transformed into - it’s nice to see it buzzing again!

The conference yesterday dealt mostly with how publishers, the news business and content creators are navigating the impact AI has had on all sorts of revenue streams. If you’re a mid-senior career professional, even more-so if you work in the media, I can’t stress enough the need to really dive in to all things AI. For one, definitely follow on LinkedIn or Substack. He’s amassed a huge following and is probably the best author on all things AI in terms of learning tools and understanding how to master it. It’s free advice in a world where you hit a paywall after 10 seconds! If you spend 30 minutes a day for a month learning and using AI tools in-depth, you’d be amazed how much you can learn.

I’ve recently bought some credits on trial using Lovable AI , in my opinion, one of the best Vibe Coding apps in the marketplace. There are tons of them so test as many of them as you can for free (most of the time.) I’m not a coder but it’s amazing what you can do these days. If you can write it, you can have these apps build it.

The future isn’t tomorrow - it’s now.

But, with what’s happening to the College game, the easy access to all the gambling apps and NIL, I worry it’s become a compromised product controlled by corporate America and worse, tech bros. On a side note, I just got an email yesterday that I was accepted to be a volunteer in some capacity during the World Cup. Let’s see what role I get placed in! I’m excited about it!

Grub Street’s piece last week, good profile about Emily Sundberg’s ( creator) front-row seat to her life running (and eating) between Park Slope and NYC, but the real standout moment in the article, for me at least, was this:

She nailed the appeal of that space. I’m a regular at its sister location, the Park Slope Armory, where I spend 2–3 mornings a week attempting to play basketball with a cross-generational crew. The early-morning quiet makes the gym feel even more cavernous and grandiose than it actually is. For the record, I haven’t spotted Emily there, and if I did, I wouldn't say a peep (a true New York’er never would). She’s also right about the boundaries; my wife wouldn't think to bother her. Like me, I’ll assume she treats a workout as a sacred solo mission. No work thoughts, no politics, no news; just a place for an hour or so and, for me, just trying to Be Like Mike. In fact, this morning is our self-created 1st Annual Armory Cup- 5 teams vying to win local gym glory and a $5 plastic cup!

But I digress- it’s a good article and boy, does she eat well!

Lastly, the drawn-out Paramount bid to take over the Disco Brothers (aka. Warner Brothers and Discovery) is finally happening. The nepo baby (David Ellis) got his Dad ( Larry Ellison-CEO of Oracle) to buy one of the most historic Hollywood studios in LA. I worry about LA, the ecosystem, culture and the entertainment industry it was built-on. I worry about the people I know at CNN and CBS and what happens with that. It’s been a tumultuous time for the media, news and entertainment business these last few years. This deal pours more salt on an already gaping wound.

My hope is that with platforms like Substack and their growing rival, Beehiiv, journalism evolves into a new form—one where readers can support their favorite writers, journalists and creators can earn enough to make a living and the dialogue continues. Meanwhile, further media consolidation will consume broadcast/cable news and local ‘papers’ are in grave danger of becoming irrelevant.

“What’s funny is that my Mother, my Grandparents , My aunts and uncles lived on E 3rd and 18th avenue. When I was looking for a spot, my Mother sent me a Craig’s List add for this location and I ignored it until one day when I was driving to my Grandparent’s house, I remembered she sent me this address and drove by and saw that this spot was empty. I had no idea about Windsor Terrace or what was around the location. I took it over the next day, started to build it out and truly had no idea about the community until I opened up my doors. The doors opened officially in January 2010. I had been working in Manhattan the whole time and randomly driving up this street, the same spot my Mother had been emailing me about.”

Another blizzard came and went- this Winter has been a tough one! Spring starts March 20th! Let the count down begin. I’m over it.

I was slowly losing my mind this past Monday and forced myself to take a walk at around 4:30pm. It seemed like everyone had the same idea and people were shoveling themselves out of blizzard hell! No surprise, Double Windsor was busy. The community stepped up and cleared more corner pathways and sidewalks. Ditto for dog poop. I know it’s a thing but it seems like the entire city is suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder

Best thing about this past Sunday - watching the men’s TEAM USA win the Gold medal (congrats to the Women’s Team as well - Pure Gold!) I was a kid when they beat Russia (4-3) ( Do you believe in Miracles?). They still had to beat Finland to win the Gold Medal back in 1980 but it was a memory I’ll never forget. The Olympics always seem to bring this country together- doesn’t matter what side of the aisle you live on. I told my son as we watched the game together that it may take another 46 years for them to get another Gold in Olympic hockey. Don’t ever take winning for granted.

The numbers are in: 26 million people watched the game (including the West Coast, who were up at 5 a.m.). Impressive - maybe more worthy than celebrating the team at the White House with a buffet of McDonald's

Last week, another media culling this time from the NY Daily News. The paper called it Valentine's Day Massacre firing 16 people leaving just 4 national writers left on the desk. Thank the heartless owners, Alden Global Capital, who are notorious for ruining the country’s local newspaper hubs. Shame on them.

Legendary newspaper writer, Pete Hamill, who was born and raised in Park Slope, at one point lived along Prospect Park West, would be ashamed. At one stage of his career, he served as the Editor in Chief for the Daily News and the NY Post, would have been appalled at what took place. If there’s one article you should read it’s the one he wrote in NY Magazine revisiting his native Brooklyn. It captures the essence of a changing neighborhood even back then. HBO did a documentary about him and legend writer Jimmy Breslin Deadline Artists which unfortunately does not include the footage taken right here at Farrell’s in Windsor Terrace. I would love to have seen those scenes for all the obvious reasons.

• Good article in Grub Street yesterday about the challenges of being a restaurant owner during this difficult Jan/Feb stretch. I’m posting this because the photo taken is of our very own United Meat Market and better yet taken by a professional photographer friend and former colleague of mine who I worked with at Getty Images. Spencer Platt is a top notch news photog- been everywhere all over the world follow his Instagram - another WT resident!

• The Park Slope Civic Council are planning a mix tour of residences and are looking for sustainable houses in South Slope and Windsor Terrace to include in this year’s tour. The House Tour will take place on Sunday, May 17, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. • Brunch at Le Paddock is always stellar and just a great place to take friends from out of town. It was the first place my wife and I ate when we first moved to WT. (Cash and Amex Only)

• Just down the way, my son and I always make sure to go to CENA for their TACO TUESDAY special (3 tacos for $12). When the weather warms up it’s a nice place to grab tacos and eat outside!

• My wife and I have visited Steppe just a few times but we always loved what furniture and decor they sell. Mid Century Modern , great finds and you can view some of their stock on the site.

• Duck Island Cafe and Bar at the rink in Prospect Park offering Snow Slime workshop ( $38) for children aged 4-10 y/o this Sat 2/28 from 1pm-2:30pm Hot Cocoa included - food available for purchase

• The Green House at GreenWood Cemetary is looking like a grand opening this Spring it looks beautiful

• Just down the street from it on 5th is a delicious pizza place ( table seating) in a charming old yellow brick building. I’ve only ordered from here and it was delicious. In the Spring, I plan to eat there ASTARITA

• The transformation over on 5th Ave ( where the old Key Food was located) is something to see. The new rentals called the Paseo sits atop a new CVS, a soon-to-be Planet Fitness and one of my fave’s LIDL.

• I missed my chance for a sneak peak at the newly opened Dial Up Days on 7th Ave- 90’s nostalgic with video games, themed candy and cafe style treats to order at the counter. I need this in my life right about now!

• I’m sad to see Jean-George’s The Tin Building shutdown this past Monday. Yes, it was ridiculously expensive , opulent and somewhat ostentatious but it was housed in a beautiful building located right down at South Street. Valiant effort , confused concept and so-so food. In it’s place will be this Balloon Museum

• One of my all time favorite Pizza places is of course, Wheated right off Coney Island Avenue (B68 from Bartel Pritchard drops you off very close). Nothing beats Werkstaat Schnitzel and their pretzel! Just delicious Viennese/German fare ( Cash and Amex Only) . I’ve worked out of Der Pioneer when I lived close by and they just might have the best Pastries , coffee and brunch. And finally, Lark Cafe is not only a quaint coffee shop but they also sell Jane’s Ice Cream from Kingston, NY. Which if you haven’t tried might be the best around!

One of my in-between Summer college jobs growing up out on Long Island was, believe it or not, mowing lawns, landscaping and doing pre/post burial work at a Catholic Cemetery. Days were long, conditions were hot and humid and the work was monotonous but I enjoyed it in a strange, calming way. I was outside, cutting grass, maintaining the grounds and being witness to families parting ways with their loved ones. It sounds depressing but it wasn’t. Quite the contrary, and despite the aura of sadness, I found it strangely beautiful. In fact, my parents are buried there so it all somehow comes full circle in the end.

I worked with career groundskeepers employed by the Diocese. This was their life and for three months each and every Summer punk kids like myself would work alongside them. They were all characters, and one of these career guys, during our morning 15-minute coffee break, would teach me how to bet on horses from the odds column of his beloved Daily News sports section. True story, one of the Summer hires I worked and went to High School with was none other than current NY Knicks announcer/reporter Alan Hahn. We often grabbed lunch together and sometimes even found ourselves hiding out from the staff in all places the mausoleum to take a break from the searing sun!

I’m describing all of this because whenever I find myself taking a walk over at Greenwood Cemetery, I think to myself, ‘ wow, what an amazing job this crew does to maintain this place!’

There’s a reason the grounds are so meticulous; always respect the grass.

My wife and I moved to Windsor Terrace in 2015 (from California) and this was the criteria; excellent schools, reasonable commute to the city and definitely not Williamsburg. Eleven years later we are happy with our decision. Landing in Windsor Terrace just felt right. We literally had three days on our visit from LA to make a decision on where to live. We knew nothing about Windsor Terrace, no clue about the deep Irish rooted community nor just how charming it was in any shape or form. We were going on Dept. of Education data points, inside school reviews and Facebook parent groups.

Then there’s this; I was born at what used to be the New York Infirmary in the city, baptized at St. Brendan’s RCC in Midwood (Ave O) and my parents briefly lived on 13th St between Ave M & N in Brooklyn. My wife is part Irish, our son’s middle name is 100% Irish and my name is Mick (aka Michael.) Seems like Windsor Terrace was always meant to be.

If that’s not kismet I don’t know what is.

Happy Friday the 13th! (welcome new subscribers!)

I won’t spend too much time on last week’s Superbowl - boring game, spectacular Half Time Show (top 10 of all-time) and a few good commercials but otherwise just felt - blah. Kudos to NBC Sports, a huge weekend for them between Superbowl coverage, the Olympics over in Milan and now the NBA All Star Game this weekend on the network; bravo!

Across NBC, Peacock and Telemundo, the Superbowl audience came in just shy of 138M viewers which is a massive number. Live sports always drives audience and ads -that’s just a fact.

ESPN/ABC is taking over the Super Bowl next year, and if I played the prediction market game (Kalshi be gone!) , my money is on the world’s biggest pop icon—and Disney+ favorite—landing the Halftime Show. Can you imagine the ratings? It would be the ultimate 'swan song' for what already has been a legendary career. Swifties, start plotting and planning your trip to LA! No Bad Blood there!

I’ve been all in on the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. It turns out I actually have Peacock Gold Zone which shows multiple events on one screen which is very bad for work productivity. I’m a sports junkie of sorts. My wife says that if there were ants fighting on TV I would watch it- she’s not exactly wrong and so throw in 14 days of an all-day sporting event with Italians looking great, speaking Italian ( watch Curling when the Italians bark instructions to one another- assolutamente bellissimo!) Count me in! ( I had to add the Google Doodle below - the series of Olympic themed illustrations are too good.)

• The High School is taking over the old Macy’s store on Fulton St in Downtown Brooklyn opening this Fall. Did you see the Basketball Court they are going to have NBA Sized Court (I gotta play that court!)

• I read a story this week about how Greenwood Cemetery will be the first cemetery on the East Coast to offer, ‘Natural Organic Reduction,” also known as Terramation. As for me, spread my ashes at Citifield!

• I think we’re going to this one- at The Nitehawk on Monday 2/16 they are showing Dog Day Afternoon in Collaboration With the Broadway Production at 7pm. For those who do NOT know this, a lot of that classic film’s scenes were filmed right here in Windsor Terrace near the bridge over to BUGS on PPW. And our buddies at the super delicious Dog Day Brooklyn made sure to honor it by naming their Chicago style dogs just that- KILLER SHAKES also

• The place my wife and I probably frequent the most - either for their excellent Happy Hour (M-Thu 3pm-6pm) or a Friday night drink and dinner at the bar is at Hilltop Tavern Georgia, the owner , is never too far away, always welcoming and her and her husband also own Hamilton’s which we all know and love! They recently closed Alchemy - never actually made it there but people loved it!

• Everyone is raving about IL Leone and their pizza joint over on 158 7th Ave in the Slope. They are from Portland, Maine and apparently the lobster pizza is the get. Do you get to wear a bib?

What do people do? Even if you wanted to tip the host - who even carries cash anymore?

• Since it is President’s Day on Monday consider heading in to the Financial District and have lunch or dinner at White Horse Tavern in FiDi. It’s owned by a wonderful Windsor Terrace based family so there’s all the connection you need! And yes, peek in to Fraunces Tavern because it just steeps in American History!

They say lightning never strikes a person twice but this past Tuesday I was hit a third time! [The first two were landing in the NYT’s on two separate occasions!]

Let me explain.

I launched my first post last Friday and asked 6 friends of mine (+ my wife ) on my WhatsApp chain , a group of guys I play hoops with over at the Park Slope Amory and my siblings to subscribe. They kindly agreed and even shared my invite with their friends. By day’s end I had twenty or so subscribers. I was psyched!

This past Tuesday, I noticed an abnormal uptick for subscribers in my email and didn’t think much of it. I thought, ‘cool’ and since I work FT at a legacy news agency I needed to focus on my day job. But as the day progressed, my phone kept pinging and pinging. What’s going on? “The bots took over,” I thought to myself. And then it hit me, while eating my air fried Hot Pocket for lunch, my jaw literally dropped!

I was just doing my usual Feed Me scroll when I saw it—my own bulletin getting a mention! If you told me this would happen four days after my first post, I wouldn't have believed you. I was totally floored! Thanks to the mention, I’m at 160+ subs and counting!

This bulletin has nothing to do with news- you all go to those places already. This is more about where I live; Windsor Terrace (and nearby places.) It’s where my wife and I raise our son and where we have formed bonds, made friends and where we’ve seen our boy grow-up with friends he’s known since Pre-K over at K280. I grew up in the burbs out on Long Island (my wife from Jersey) and the rules of the game have changed raising kids in NYC. But, in Windsor Terrace at least, it’s about as a suburban feel as you can get. To that I am grateful.

So whether you are thinking of moving here, you live here already, grew up here it’s a welcoming place. The neighborhood is growing fast , demos are changing , a future high rise is coming but having said all that; it’s a unique area of Brooklyn with great schools and a real sense of community. I labeled this a ‘Town within a City’ for a reason and if you live here you know exactly what I mean. So, if you are unfamiliar with WT please make your way for a visit, buy,eat, drink locally ( and use the guidepost below of where to start) -ideally when the weather improves and you can enjoy nearby Prospect Park (another gem that we all love.) You’ll quickly get a sense of what Windsor Terrace is all about. The folks at Patch feel the same.

Similar to how Emily and what her newsletter addresses, I too care deeply about the media/news industry and the fractured landscape we find ourselves in - the new ‘news’ creator economy , the importance of scale and the relevancy of both long and short form journalism. And with the heartbreaking news about the culling of The Washington Post , it sent alarm bells throughout the news business. I’ve been through two layoffs and it is never easy. It just feels like it’s one media company after another or another local newspaper has closed its doors. In this case, a legendary news giant has been slayed.

At the same time, with the emergence of Substack, I’m hopeful that both legacy and up-and-coming journalists and creatives can find a new place, capture new audiences and have an opportunity to make a living from it (or try to at least.) For those who remember MySpace- SubStack is the modern, more refined version of MySpace with a slick UX and superior UI experience at a more sophisticated pace and offering. Believe it or not MySpace is still operational! Instagram has become too show-offy for me. I feel like I’ve learned something when I read someone’s Substack post.

So WELCOME and THANK YOU to all of you who hit that link in the Feed Me post and subscribed and know that I am truly grateful and hope you stick it out with me every Friday when I post at 9am EST.

Now to the original post I’ve been working on since last Saturday- this was all before the FEED me tsunami - read below and have a great weekend and week

I know I know it’s STILL COLD but Super Bowl Weekend is upon us which means either some of us are 100% engaged, some pay attention just for the commercials and half time show (Go Bad Bunny!) or maybe you’ll just keep the Puppy Bowl on a loop!

Meanwhile , for those who care about the Winter Olympics taking place in Italy, you can watch the Opening Ceremony LIVE at 2pm EST today on NBC. Here’s the entire 16 day schedule [whoever has Peacock you can stream it all hours- I do not]. Strangely enough I do enjoy watching Curling- maybe I’m just getting old!

While some of you could honestly give a crap about any of the above!

I’m going to try and address both audiences and blend in as much of Windsor Terrace I can because as you and I know what we don’t have in WT are that many ‘sports’ bars. So, I need to stretch this one out to local environs and even -dare I suggest it- consider a trek in to the city!

Don’t Care An Ounce For The Superbowl

• If you’re into body treatments for sure you need to go support the folks over at Brooklyn Herborium. Just a really quaint, lovely store with nice gift items all organic based with purpose. With a write up in GOOP a few years back it’s been a great addition to the neighborhood these last 6 years. They are open Sunday!

• Pick up Valentine’s gift at our beloved True Love Always and always buy local when you can! Don’t forget about newly opened and very polished Fell Flowers

• Or buy a book to gift over at Terrace Books [Just finished Keith McNally’s ‘I Regret Almost Everything’ and Graydon Carter’s ‘When The Going Was Good’ - if you want to get 90’s nostalgic about New York you’ll enjoy these two reads.]

• If you can, head over to the Brooklyn Museum and see the African Malian photographer Seydou Keita exhibit being shown now. It’s really just a phenomenal show. As a reminder, the Museum’s admission is suggested so pay what you feel is fair. [Pro Tip if you are able do NOT bring a backpack or umbrella since they make you check it and the line is often times long while it is free of charge it could take a while- small purse is fine to bring inside the Museum]

• Over in Red Hook people are loving the Red Hook Pinball Museum ( 362 Van Brunt St) open Sunday until 10pm. Bus B61 drops you right there [btw love that line and can board it right in front of Oak Park Pharmacy.] Don’t lose your snow filled parking spot!

• Just down the road from that museum, taking place this Sunday b/w 12pm-6pm all ages is Pioneer Works Free Open House for their Second Sunday series- a beautiful brick building filled with art and a food truck how can you go wrong!

• If you can’t get enough dogs in your life, head to the annual Meet The Breeds tomorrow and Sunday at the used-to-hate but now admire Jacob Javits Center

• Staying indoors ( who wants to walk around in this weather) over at Hudson Yards they are celebrating Lunar New Year with a traditional dance tomorrow at 1pm or 3pm or 5pm in honor of Year of the Horse (btw if you can head over to the very chic Bar Torino it’s in the mezzanine level of all places the HQ of Black Rock.) Yes, it’s a mall but it’s warm and the Spanish Market downstairs is decent!

• If you have the energy, Graydon Carter’s storefront named after his newsletter Air Mail over in the West Village is nice to have a coffee and (gulp!) read a magazine or newspaper !

• I am seriously going to make an effort to go to the much vaunted VATO at 226 7th Ave- open Thu-Fri 7am-3pm it’s THE place right now to get their Austin Style Breakfast Burrito - the question is do I have the patience to wait on line! In this weather?

• The NYT gave a shout out to these guys over on 4th Ave Macario and I personally love their specialty - Lonches Banados - go check it out - recommend eating at the restaurant instead of take- out!

What to Eat

• I am a big fan of John's Deli on Prospect Avenue. Old school Italian deli that make really delicious sandwiches, hero’s and they cater large trays so you can order for the game! Run don’t walk!

• The folks over at Zoeller's offer a lot of large tray sandwiches and cookies ,etc so always a solid option. Their cooking classes look really cool - need to try it one day.

• Across the way, Krupa Grocery has a Superbowl offering ‘Get Her What She Wants’ which is Game Day Chili (Patriots Red Bean & Beef Chili vs Seahawks

  Night Market Chili) and btw I absolutely love their Nashville Hot Shrimp Burger - simply the best!

• For BBQ our friends at Baby Smoker are reliable and always there on Friday ( hoping they cleared their smoker of snow) serving excellent racks of ribs , brisket and sides! Buy them today - heat them up for the big game - can never ever go wrong!

• You can’t mention sandwiches in this town without mentioning one of my fave’s Brancaccio's Food Shop on Fort Hamilton Parkway. They might have arguably one of the best Chicken Cutlet sandwiches in town! Place sells out quick so plan ahead!

• And for dessert trays you can never go wrong with Regina's Bakery or Lady Bird Bakery

• I went to Syracuse University for 2 years and not only experienced ‘Lake Effect’ snow for the first time but more importantly ate a LOT of Buffalo wings. I say that because if you have a car for sure head over to Wegmans Near Brooklyn Navy Yard you can buy their famous Buffalo wings (Wegmans started upstate) - I highly recommend going early and while they have a parking lot it gets crowded. Killer bakery as well! Again, is it worth losing your car spot- I think it is!

• We enjoy eating at LA TAQ ( reminds of an old fave of mine Tacos Por Favor in Santa Monica, CA) and they have a Superbowl Special ( Pre-Order by Phone only NO delivery pick up in store only ) For $12 you get 3lbs Rotisserie Chicken, Rice, Beans Flour Tortilla - INSANE Deal!

• This past November, the Prospect Park Alliance’s re-design of two parks inside the Park have been approved Playground Design Moves Forward. Looking like full completion in 2028. Money for making parks better I’ll always be in favor of!

• A self cleaning toilet is up and has been operational now for a few months near Grand Army Plaza. And for those who have toddlers, young kids ( why is it that when you are home they don’t have to go but 15 minutes out they ask for a bathroom!) this is a good option when they need to go! • Speaking of which , if you ever need to find a place to go without buying that $5 coffee - this is what you need to use Got2GoNYC and save yourself money!

• Never thought I would spend this much time writing about bathrooms!

• My family volunteers with this group about 2-3x per year and we help with distributing food donations to NYCHA residents over near Gowanus. I can’t recommend these folks enough if you are looking to volunteer Gowanus Mutual Aid . It’s all orchestrated masterfully by Claiborne Milde with 100% of it volunteer run. If interested you can sign up on the link above. It’s 2-3 hours on a Saturday morning - time you will actually cherish because everyone needs help somewhere!

• If you have clothes and shoes to donate- there is a donations bin placed right next the American Legion Post 1380 at 290 PPW. I’ve used it a number of times but have also gone online and arranged for St Mary's Clothing Drive Online Pick Up System you pick a date, time and label your bag outside of your home marked and they pick it up - simple, easy and your used clothes are someone else’s treasure!

• Registration is up for this year’s Brooklyn St. Patrick’s Day Marathon March 15th 9:30am Rain or Shine 5k, 10K or Half Marathon - I’m not a runner and admire all who are!

Education

• If you’re a teacher or educator, I definitely recommend connecting with the Weeksville Heritage Center for classroom material, perhaps a trip to visit this unique center located in Crown Heights. • Over at the Windsor Terrace Public Library , every Wednesday they host a FREE Teen Tech Time from 3:30pm -5pm - and yes it’s not technically why I want my son to go there BUT it's a safe space and surrounded by books - good place for friends to meet up and stay warm! They fixed the lightning inside as well.

• The NYT’s deadline for High School students who want to engage in their 2 week NYC Summer Academy is February 27th. • ROAST Coffee is currently under a ‘soft’ opening and are open from 7am-7pm. I popped in there yesterday and it looked like they have tables to set up outside once it’s nice out ( maybe in 5 weeks or so-please!) and the pastries look delicious. They are located in the old Betty Bakery location ( corner of 16th and PPPW).

• Soon to be open Fell Flowers (perhaps TODAY?) located at 242 PPPW right next to Emack And Bolio's Ice Cream is looking lovely and looks like they are starting to take Valentine’s orders on their site ( I do love the line at Mr Lime Valentine’s morning with all of us Husbands, Dad’s, Boyfriends, Girlfriends, wives , partners, etc) making sure to get those flowers that morning- just hilarious! Same goes for trying to find Valentine cards the day before at Walgreen’s - it’s like the empty shelves at Trader Joe's during this past weekend’s ‘Blizzard” (8 -10 inches in Prospect Park)

• I credit my friends on my WhatsApp group chat for pointing this out to me but the Prospect Park Deli ( 155 PPSW near Uncle Louie G’s ice cream) is going crazy viral with their WAGYU CHOPPED CHEESE SANDWICH Who knew? I love stories like this and although I have not yet tried this delicious looking creation I plan to. Immediately thereafter finishing this gooey incredible sandwich, I will walk 20K steps around Prospect Park to burn it off!

• While I have not been to this newly opened bar/lounge/jazz music establishment in the old Della Valle space called CAT Bar on Prospect Avenue across from Le Paddock I will for sure soon have a cocktail. It doesn’t appear to have a website but the hours are on the insta page. Looks like they have some cool MERCH

• This Sunday 6pm over at The Lonesome Club they are having their Irish Trad Seisiun ( traditional live Irish music). Book a table!

Outside of Windsor Terrace

• While not technically in WT but close enough- the soon to be bar taking over the old laundromat on 13th and 8th looks promising - check out the interior from this Reddit Post - Maybe Gold Star Beer Counter

• I’ve been meaning to try this year old seafood place across from IKEA in Red Hook- If anyone has been let me know Lundy's Of Brooklyn and no I haven’t yet been able to snag a reservation at Red Hook Tavern ( I’ll get that burger one day soon)

• Red Hook and Bushwick will soon have two large-scale film and TV production studios owned and operated by Echelon Studios Between this and Paramount building sound stages in Bayonne, NJ and Netflix breaking ground in Fort Monmouth, NJ plus the newly opened Sunset Pier 94 studios along the West Side Highway- the East Coast is becoming the new Hollywood! [and looks like WT’s restaurant Krupa Grocery hosted an intimate lunch with powerhouse A24 from an insta story on their handle- very cool! ]

• If you haven’t been, you can actually spend a morning/afternoon or evening ( worth the baby sitter if it’s a date night) over in Ridgewood, Queens. Here’s a fun itinerary if you do go Things to do in Ridgewood A lot of posts about this Mexican Restaurant HellBender (closest Subway is L or M )

• And for LA people who now live in Windsor Terrace who used to read the NY Post when you lived in LA ( because you missed NY so much) my old NewsCorp buddies just launched the West Coast LA Version - read it here California NY Post ( if you now live here and miss living in Los Angeles! - currently 74 degrees and sunny-not fair!)

• Lastly, not a bad deal at the new Brooklyn Basketball facility ( the old Models across from Barclays Center) for $120 you can take your 10-17 y/o on Saturday February 7th from 11:30am-1:30pm for shooting drills and training THEN you get 2 free Nets vs Wizards tickets for the 3pm game Shoot 360 Clinic plus Nets Game (even for the die hard Knicks fan that I am it’s a great deal + it’s 5 whole SCREEN FREE hours! )

Whether you’re navigating morning rush drop-off to your kid’s local school, grabbing a drink with a friend, /dinner or housemate, or catching a movie at the Nitehawk, there is a deep sense of 'we' here. This community shows up for one another. Now, it’s time we had a space that reflects that sentiment—a place where we live, breathe and make memories!

We’ll shy away from restaurant reviews ( use Yelp for that) but perhaps highlight a restaurant or shop or store owner or just a WT local on the street! Maybe snap their photo , shout out their signature dish, cocktail, best selling item or a service they provide or even as simple as why they love living or working in Windsor Terrace.

Keep it simple. Keep it real. Just be your authentic self. But, as the bulletin grows, it will too and as organically as one can!

The goal is to post by 9 am every Friday.
